On Tuesday the regulator said Crown failed to explain its lax oversight of junket partners and that it breached the law for failing to have a “robust process to consider the ongoing probity of junket entities. In a letter to Crown, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation told the James Packer-backed casino operator it could recommence junket operations once it “has satisfied the Commission that its processes and procedures have been improved to the satisfaction of the Commission”. The inquiry by former NSW Supreme Court judge Patricia Bergin, SC, found Crown unfit to hold a casino licence in NSW because it partnered with organised crime to run junkets between 20, facilitated money laundering, and failed to protect its 19 China-based staff from arrest in 2016 for illegally promoting gambling trips. This sets Victoria apart from regulators in NSW and WA which axed junkets in February in the wake of the NSW Bergin inquiry. The Victorian gambling regulator has slapped a $1 million fine on Crown Resorts for partnering for eight years with high-roller “junket” operators linked to criminal Triad gangs.īut the regulator has not issued an outright ban on junkets, which bring in wealthy overseas gamblers, from operating at Crown’s flagship Southbank casino in Melbourne. ![]()
